The aim of the project is to determine the exact irrigation requirements and to control the irrigation accordingly so that no more water is used than necessary. This measure falls under the term “variable rate application”, i.e. the variable application of fertilizer, water and seed on the basis of extended information about the actual demand in the field, which is determined by modern technologies. This is a central concern of precision agriculture/horticulture/viticulture, which is setting new standards worldwide in resource-conserving cultivation in order to produce more agricultural output with less use of resources. The aim of WP 6 is the economic inventory of typical farms in the region and the evaluation of hedgerow planting with regard to its effect at farm level. In addition to well-established methods of farm evaluation, agent-based models are used to assess the agricultural options for action and their effects at farm level.
